Many people were involved in the American Civil War. However, the two most important Generals were Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Lee led the Confederacy and Grant lead the Union. Lee later surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865. Since Grant had won the war he was recognized for his heroism and later became the 18th president.

1. Fredrick Douglass He was a slave who escaped to the north in 1838 to become free. He worked with abolitionists to end slavery. He fought for the rights of black soldiers during the war.
2. Robert E. Lee He led the confederate army of Virginia during the civil war. He surrendered to Ulysses s. grant on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox court house, Virginia.
3. Sojouner Truth She was an abolitionist and women's rights activist during the civil war. She traveled around the country preaching and working against injustice.
4. Harriet Tubman She was born as a slave on a plantation in Maryland. After escaping to the North, she became a leader in the Underground railroad.
5.Abraham Lincoln He was the 16th president of the united states. He served as president from 1861-1863. He gave the Gettysburg address.
6.Jefferson Davis Jefferson Davis was the first and only president of the confederacy. He was later captured by the northern soldiers in Georgia in 1865.
7.Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was one of the Souths most successful Generals. He earned his nickname at the first battle of bull run.
8. Ulysses S. Grant Ulysses s. grant was the commander for the Union army. He lead the Union troops to victory during the American Civil War. He later became the 18th president.
9. Clara Barton She was a nurse during the American civil war. She was known as the "Angel of the battlefield." She later found the American red cross.
